Embroidered patches are one of the most versatile and widely used apparel decoration methods. Design possibilities range from classic stitched logos to modern textured effects. Avery Dennison's custom embroidery solutions include flat embroidered patches, 3D embroidery, chenille, and direct embroidery replacement. Each is available with specialty threads, decorative stitching options, and environmentally conscious materials across fashion, sportswear, workwear, and corporate apparel.

Direct embroidery replacement
The look of direct embroidery with the flexibility of heat application
Best for: Classic embroidered looks with the flexibility of heat application.
Direct embroidery replacement is a heat-applied alternative to traditional direct-to-garment embroidery. The embroidery is stitched onto a fabric base, then the edges are trimmed until barely visible. The result looks and feels like direct embroidery, but with all the flexibility, consistency, and repositionability of heat application. No backing fabric, no distortion from machine tension, and full compatibility with stretch fabrics and performance apparel. It's also ideal for designs with separate "floating" elements that conventional embroidery can't achieve.

3D embroidery patches
Dimensional embroidery with premium depth and texture
Best for: Premium streetwear, team sports, and statement branding.
3D embroidery patches are created by stitching over dense foam to produce raised, dimensional graphics with a tactile, premium feel. The technique can stand alone or be paired with flat embroidery to accentuate key areas of a design, adding depth and visual weight to logos, crests, and brand marks. It's a bold, elevated look that works across sportswear, streetwear, and premium fashion.

Chenille patches
Soft, tufted texture: from vintage to contemporary
Best for: Vintage-inspired collections, varsity apparel, and retro branding.
Chenille is a classic embroidery technique that uses looped threads to create a soft, tufted effect. It looks great and feels even better. Chenille is a natural fit for vintage or retro designs, but it can just as easily be updated with unique ground materials and threads into something modern. Both thread loop height and density can be adjusted, and overprinting opens the door to custom gradients and patterns.

Soft and plush hand feel with a distinctive look
Adjustable thread loop height and density
Specialty threads include satin, matte, and metallic
Overprinting for custom gradients and patterns
